Last year, 81% of the companies that make up the S&P 500 Index published sustainability reports, a jump of 61% in just four years. Clearly, these companies recognize that stakeholders expect (and even demand) this kind of reporting. That’s consistent with the Edelman Trust Barometer finding that consumers worldwide want companies to invest in making the world a better place in addition to profitable ventures. Companies increasingly use social media to address sustainability, with one study found GE and Unilever atop the Social Media Sustainability Index.
