IABC Fellows to Explore Communicating Open-Book Management

September 3, 2020 by Shel Holtz 1 Comment

In his book, “The Great Game of Business,” Jack Stack introduced the business world to open-book management. The Great Game of Business website points out, “Open-book management at its most effective far outperforms a definition as simple as “sharing financial information with employees”. Open-book isn’t just about opening your financials to your company, it’s about responsibility, ownership, results, and growth, all of these things can come together to drive the needle forward in your organization. With proper training and knowledge, all levels of your business start to act and engage just like the owner, or leadership.”

Clearly, communication is a vital dimension of open-book management. On the next Circle of Fellows, four IABC Fellows will look at the communicator’s role, including introducing the concept to leadership. At noon ET on Thursday, September 17, join moderator/Fellow Brad Whitworth and IABC Fellows Jim Shaffer, Tosh Hattori, and Amanda Hamilton-Attwell for a fascinating conversation. Of special note, Jim has worked closely with Jack Stack, founder of open-book management and CEO of SRC Holdings. He escorts clients to SRC Holdings so they can see first-hand how to implement open-book management.

You will be able to ask questions in real-time using the chat function on YouTube or via Twitter with the hashtag #COF61.

Interesting article. Good to see Jim Shaffer is involved. I remember conversations with Jim years ago.
Maybe there is a way for us to collaborate, given research on OBM, or as we call it, economic engagement, to drive results, working with Harvard Business School. If that would be of interest, you can reach me at bill.fotsch@openbookcoaching.com
Here are a couple of our recent HBR articles for reference: https://hbr.org/2020/06/run-your-business-so-youll-never-need-layoffs https://hbr.org/2018/01/more-than-a-paycheck
I would be particularly interest in getting your input on our research, again with HBS, testing the premise that economic engagement drives substantially improved business results. The several hundred CEO surveys compiled so far have been encouraging. We look to have 10,000 CEO responses by year end.
