If you peruse search results for “the metaverse,” it will seem like half the content you find focuses on defining it. At Nvidia, executive Richard Kerris thinks it’s pretty easy to define. “The metaverse is not a place,” he says. “It’s the network for the next version of the Web.” Neville and Shel explore that definition and related developments in this short midweek FIR episode.
The next monthly, long-form episode of FIR will drop on Monday, August 15. FIR “shorts” — episodes under 15 minutes — will appear once or twice weekly.

One thing that everyone fails to mention when talking about moving to the Metaverse and making All The Things 3D is…text. I doubt humans are going to stop reading, and we read in 2d. Not only that, our eyeballs have a preferred right-to-left (or left-to-right) character width to traverse, and that dictated the shape of print books and even the way scrolls were laid out. Not to mention the fact that I very much doubt anyone wants to put a 3D headset on to read text.
That’s good point, Sallie I think the focus on 3D and visuals is so strong that it’s the complete centre of attention. Yet I do believe that 3D and visuals are the defining focus of how mass engagement will eventually take root in the Brave New World. It won’t be headsets either. But this is some way off, I think, from mainstream adoption. 2D and text won’t go quietly!
