WhatsApp had a user base of up to one billion  making it the most globally popular messaging application. While 56% of Internet users in India use WhatsApp every day, 51% use Facebook.

Ericsson ConsumerLab in their latest report titled Communication in the World of Apps have shared some sizzling numbers: Indian Android OS users are spending 47% of their time on messenger apps which provides free chat and voice; and among these, WhatsApp is the most preferred choice as 98% of the respondents used WhatsApp atleast once in a month. WhatsApp garnered the lion’s share of 98%; Hike had a share of 44%; Facebook Messenger 37%; Google+ Hangout 32% and WeChat 26%.

Startups are using Whatsapp for three major purposes:

 Internal communication

 Customer support  – The Delhi Police last year launched a dedicated helpline powered by WhatsApp: 9910641064. On the launch day, they received more than 23,000 messages and complaints via on this number. The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) is providing Volvo bus helpline service through WhatsApp. The service is available for complaints and suggestions from Volvo bus passengers and information related to the buses (91 992 546 6996).)

 Promotion – Bewakoof.com started promotions via Whatsapp, and now they claim to be making 15% of their total sales through the instant messenger.

With 70 million active users (Nov, 2014), about 10% of the total worldwide users, India is the largest single country in terms of number of users.
